Are you finding bed bugs at home all of sudden this summer?
Cases of bed bug problems have been reported throughout California – these pesky bloodsuckers have spread across the United States very quickly in the past couple of years according to a survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was discovered that California’s three most densely populated cities also made it to the top 50-bed bug cities in America with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland all ranking in the top ten. And you know what the scary thing about this is? The number of bed bug infestations in America are still on the rise! Dr. Dong Hwan Choe is an assistant professor of entomology at UC Riverside and his most recent study from 2014 discovered that 40% of all tenants and homeowners in California have had to deal with bed bugs at some point.
Bed bugs are generally considered an all year pest and but it has been observed by professionals that bed bug activity increases a lot during the warmer summer months. In the past couple of years, the summer months have come to be known as “the bed bug season”.
It has been suggested that warmer temperatures, more movement and travel of people affect the rate of bed bug activity during the summer months. Unfortunately, California may still continue to see a rise in the overall bed bug activity.
It has been discovered that bed bugs have different levels of mobility according to the season which also influences how their population size tends to fluctuate during the course of the year.
A study by C.G Johnson in 1941 demonstrated that bed bugs could go from eggs to adults within 60 days at a temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit whereas they could complete the same feat within only 14 days at 82 degrees Fahrenheit! This difference of 8 degrees has a huge impact on bed bugs as they not only reproduce faster in warmer temperatures but they also tend to move and spread a lot more rapidly as well.
Warm weather has been known to be the ideal cause of migration to other homes and breeding.
